Pier accessibility questions shock letter writer

Re: Accessible Mats on White Rock Pier

After watching the council meeting on February 12, a motion was requested to proceed with the accessibility mats on the pier.

I was shocked at the discussion and questions asked by some of the council.

Coun. Bill Lawrence asked engineering if they've had issues with the pier being inaccessible.

Engineering replied that a few individuals have told him and that there wasn't anything official. Coun. Ernie Klassen promptly noted the substantial public who attended the council meeting on Jan. 29 as well as the numerous letters of endorsement from disability organizations, all clearly stating how the pier lacks accessibility.

In response to concerns raised, Coun. David Chensey proposed that the engineering department explore alternative suppliers of mats, diverging from reliance on a singular source. The presentation on Jan. 29 notably outlined two potential supplier options.

It is evident that there persists a gap in the council's comprehension regarding accessibility challenges and potential remedies, despite comprehensive a presentation.

Perhaps firsthand experience, such as navigating the pier in a wheelchair, may illuminate the extent of these barriers and foster a deeper understanding among council members.
