Edwardsville nursing home faces suit

Telegraph - 10/23/2016

Oct. 23--EDWARDSVILLE -- An Edwardsville nursing home and a Granite City hospital are facing a lawsuit over the death of a woman who suffered from a blow to the head, dehydration and malnourishment after being admitted to the home and transferred to the hospital.

The estate of Lucille Caban, 88, of Granite City, claims she was transferred to Rosewood Care Center of Edwardsville after a medical emergency on Aug. 14, 2014. The suit claims the patient was stable when she was admitted to the home. Named are Bravo Care of Edwardsville, doing business as Rosewood Care Center, and Illinois Hospital Co., doing business as Gateway Regional Medical Center.

The suit claims the plaintiff fell on her head during physical therapy at the home and was transferred to the emergency department of Anderson Hospital in Maryville on Aug. 18, 2014.

Caban was transferred back to Rosewood, where she remained until Sept. 7. "During this period, the health of plaintiff deteriorated," the suit claims.

She was transferred Sept. 7 to Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City. Her sodium level was excessive; she was found to be confused and suffering from a urinary tract infection, the suit alleges.

She was discharged back to Rosewood on Sept. 18. She was again admitted to Gateway Regional less than 24 hours after she was admitted on Sept. 18. The suit claims she was dehydrated and malnourished.

The suit alleges the hospital and nursing home both failed to provide the generally accepted medical care. The two-count suit is asking for at least $50,000 in each count. Neither defendant could be reached. The estate is represented by John T. Papa of Granite City.
