Council recognizes ADA's 27th anniversary

Daily Mountain Eagle - 7/19/2017

Jasper City Council members presented a proclamation Tuesday morning to recognize the 27th anniversary of passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Mayor David O'Mary read the proclamation, which proclaimed July 26 as a day of recognition of the act in the city. The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law by President George H. W. Bush on July 26, 1990. More than 3,000 disability rights advocates were on hand when Bush signed the act into law.

In signing to law, the act "sought to ensure that people with disabilities are treated with respect and dignity, free from discrimination, and are extended equal opportunities to access education, achieve gainful employment and fully participate in the recreational, leisure, and social activities in their communities ?"

Members of Disabilities Unlimited, People's First and Community Options were on hand Tuesday morning to receive the proclamation.

The proclamation said, in part, that the Americans with Disabilities Act has "enriched the lives of thousands of people with disabilities across Alabama and here in the city of Jasper, through architectural barrier removal, increased accessible public transportation, safety measures and devices to aid all disabilities, and fair employment and housing practices, bringing great inclusion ?"

It also acknowledged and commended Disabilities Unlimited and Independent Living Resources of Greater Birmingham for their work in Jasper's effort to meet the needs of those with disabilities.
