Special Diabetes Program
Deseret News - 9/16/2017
This year marked the 20th anniversary of my son's Type 1 diabetes (T1D) diagnosis. We quickly learned how to test blood sugar, count carbohydrates, inject insulin and other lifesaving tips that would become our new normal.
After 20 years, he is still healthy due to diligent care and research/development of better tools and technology. It is only through research that millions with diabetes have improved insulin, continuous glucose monitors and closed-loop insulin systems, which have vastly improved quality and quantity of life.
Much of the funding for this research has come through the Special Diabetes Program (SDP), which was created 20 years ago through a bipartisan effort. Current authorization of the program is set to expire Sept. 30.
One of every $10 spent on health care in America goes toward diabetes treatments. These costs put a strain on public and private health care systems. Continued research through the SDP will ultimately save billions and, more importantly, will continue to improve life for all with diabetes.
The SDP is a wise and effective investment. I am grateful to the members of Utah's congressional delegation who have supported this program and strongly urge them to act now to ensure this lifesaving research will continue.
