Council on Aging to host open house for Sand Castles

Cheboygan Daily Tribune - 11/17/2017

Nov. 16--CHEBOYGAN -- The Cheboygan County Council on Aging is hosting an open house for its Sand Castles Facility on Dec. 7 from 3-5 p.m.

The council is inviting caregivers and medical, business and elderly care professionals to the facility for the event. Trained staff will be on site to offer information on the many services available at the facility and to give tours.

"It's kind of an effort to make people more aware that we have an Alzheimer's unit here," said Council on Aging Executive Director Gail Tinker.

The Sand Castles facility is specifically designed for those who can no longer manage independently or who are isolated and lonely. The center can provide people's loved one or clients with a safe, supportive and cheerful environment while giving their caregiver the break they need in order to maintain or restore balance in their own lives as well.

"We understand the need for respite care," said Tinker. "We understand that the challenges of caring for an elderly, chronically ill, or disabled family member are simply a part of daily life."

Caregiving is a demanding job and no one is equipped to do it alone. The respite care provides caregivers with short term breaks from the stress of caregiving.

"The Council on Aging can help by welcoming your client or loved on into our on-site adult care facility," said Tinker.

The mission of the Sand Castles facility is to provide participants with the highest level of respect and care while making sure their needs are met. This facility can help people who are socially isolated, experience memory loss due to Alzheimer's or dementia, are in need of supervision to assure their safety, or are at risk for premature placement into a nursing home. They can also help those who experience mobility difficulties, are in need of assistance of complete activities of daily living, or their caregivers simply need a break.

Tinker is hoping people will come to the event and see what all services can be offered to help those who need them.

Pier 33 will be catering the hors d'oeuvres for the event.
