MARC 'Raises The Roof' For #GivingTuesday

Hartford Courant - 12/12/2017

Dec. 12--MARC, Inc. celebrated Giving Tuesday by having a dance party, on Nov. 28.

The party was to raise funds for a new roof on of one of MARC's group homes. This was the nonprofit organization's first "Raise the Roof" dance party.

MARC supports people with disabilities in Manchester and more than 20 towns.

Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving that is the Tuesday following Thanksgiving. Participants make donations to charities, much of which is powered through social media. Online, the day is commonly seen written as #GivingTuesday.

"There is such a great need through our nonprofit, and other nonprofits, that people will really step up and make Giving Tuesday an impactful day for MARC, Inc. of Manchester to help people with disabilities," said MARC Executive Director Kevin Zingler. "Giving Tuesday has really been a good way for us to raise money."

MARC staff danced with MARC clients over doughnuts and coffee for the 9 a.m. shindig. Mayor Jay Moran also stopped in to show his moves on the dance floor.

Zingler added that Giving Tuesday served as a way to educate the community about MARC and the work it does to aid its clients. He went live via Facebook several times throughout the morning to encourage the public to give.

This year, Facebook partnered with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to match up to $2 million of funds raised through the site for U.S. nonprofits. Facebook also waived all donation processing fees given through the site.

The Town of Manchester also contributed to MARC through the Community Development Block Grant, Zingler said. The town's donation amount was half of which was needed to replace the roof of the group home.

"We decided to use Giving Tuesday as a way to raise the other half," Zingler said.

Additional funds will go toward other needs, such vehicle repairs and relocating contract work services which will provide work for MARC clients and the community.

Friends of G, a nonprofit organization in Glastonbury that helps adults with autism, donated $1,000, Zingler said.

There were other donors, as well.

"There's a plan to use all the funds and to really put it together and help people with disabilities at the end of the day," Zingler said.

Zingler said that he and everyone at MARC are thankful for the support from the community.

"It takes a village, and we have a great village that supports us here at MARC," Zingler said.

Though Giving Tuesday is over, MARC is still accepting donations. Visit www.marcct.org for more information.
