'Transformational Power of Caregiving' workshop offered

Lake County News - 1/2/2018

LAKEPORT, Calif. ? Hospice Services of Lake County is offering a free, two-day workshop for community members who have served as caregivers or are now caring for loved ones, especially those caring for loved ones with Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia.

Led by Director of Bereavement Services Linda Laing, MFT, ATR, the workshop is slated for Saturdays, Jan. 20 and 27, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, at Hospice Services of Lake County, 1862 Parallel Drive.

Alzheimer's currently afflicts more than 30 million people nationwide, and there are limited treatments to slow its progress.

The circumstances for those with Alzheimer's makes caregiving both essential and challenging.

Topics that will be covered during the workshop will help participants keep their balance as they care for others, enrich their understanding of dementia and Alzheimer's, recognize the cause for feelings of failure and guilt.

Additionally, participants will learn how to seek support, allow others to care for loved ones, and understand the importance of self-care.

Laing is the director of Bereavement Services for Hospice Services of Lake County. She holds a master's degree in clinical psychology and is a registered art therapist.

She earned a certification in death and grief studies under the supervision of Dr. Alan D. Wolfelt at the Center for Loss and Life Transition in Fort Collins, Colo.
