LOACC invites all to open house to learn more about memory care

Lake Oswego Review - 2/15/2018

The Lake Oswego Adult Community Center offers many programs to help those with Alzheimer's and their caregivers. Check these programs out:

------------

For many years the Lake Oswego Adult Community Center has put resources into developing robust caregiver-focused programs. The list includes:

Since 2015 we have graduated five classes from our Stress Busters for Caregivers program.

LOACC Client Services Coordinator Dana Tassos has put together a caregiver library with books, DVDs and activities caregivers can check out.

Thanks to a grant we are able to host a quarterly caregiver lunch.

In partnership with the Alzheimer's Association we host two support groups plus one for family caregivers.

We also offer many programs for the care recipient, such as Memories in the Making in partnership with the Alzheimer's Association, a fine-arts class for participants with any form of dementia.

The ACC has also offered a respite program for 25 years. The current program, called the Navigators Club, is designed similarly to the social model group respite programs supported by the Brookdale Foundation Group.

The Navigators Club provides four hours of activities, lunch, conversation and music, horticultural and animal therapies.

Through Brookdale, the LOACC was awarded a grant in 2017 to start Empowered Meaningful Learners (EML), an early memory loss program. The EML curriculum is designed to challenge the participant and provide support during the early stages of memory loss.

We are so proud of our programs and want to show the community all we do and all we have to offer caregivers and participants.

To share that information the LOACC is hosting an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, March 1 at the center. Come check out what we do and view some completed projects by our participants. Refreshments will be served.

Remember the LOACC lunch service is being held at the Lake Oswego Golf Course, 17525 S.W. Stafford Road in Lake Oswego while our kitchen floor is being replaced. The menu this week features roast beef sandwiches on Friday, Feb. 16 and baked potato soup on Wednesday, Feb. 21. Cost is $4 for those 60 and over and $5 for everyone else.

The center is closed Monday Feb. 19 to honor the President's Day holiday.

The LOACC is located at 505 G Ave., Lake Oswego, 97034. A list of activities and support groups can be found on our website, loacc.info, under the Calendar banner.
