Dining with Diabetes series offered

The Truth - 4/6/2018

April 06--ELKHART COUNTY -- Diabetes is a very serious and costly disease, but research has shown that those who learn to manage their blood glucose levels, exercise regularly, and eat healthy can lower their risks of complications and lead a healthier and more productive life.

Purdue Extension Elkhart County is offering the statewide Dining with Diabetes series in April and May. Dining with Diabetes is a weekly class that runs for four weeks.

The four classes will be offered as afternoon sessions or evening sessions on Monday, April 30 and May 7, 14, and 21. The afternoon session is from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Evening sessions are from 6:30 -- 8:30 p.m. Both sessions provide the same information.

All classes will be held at the Purdue Extension Elkhart County Office, located on the Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds, 17746 County Road 34, Goshen.

The class is open to those with diabetes, and their family members and caretakers. The series costs $35/person or $45/couple and includes a notebook and printed materials. Pre-registration is required and participants are encouraged to attend all class sessions.

Mary Ann Lienhart Cross, Extension Educator in Health and Human Sciences for Elkhart County, will teach participants how to prepare meals that are healthy, easy to prepare, and tasty. Recipes will be demonstrated and participants will have the opportunity to taste. Participants will also learn up-to-date information on nutrition, meal planning, exercise, and how to understand common diabetes related medical tests.

Registration forms may be downloaded from the Extension Service website at http://www.extension.purdue.edu/elkhart under the Elkhart County Extension Homemakers section or can be picked up at the Purdue Extension Elkhart County office. If you need a reasonable accommodation to participate in this program, please call the office at 574-533-0554.

This program and all Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service programs are open to everyone.
