BRIEF: Free heart screening for students up to age 25 in Livermore

Contra Costa Times - 4/14/2018

April 14--LIVERMORE -- Students ages 12 to 25 can receive a free cardiac screening to detect heart defects.

The event, which will be held April 22 at Livermore High School, is open to all students in the Livermore Valley and surrounding areas and is in partnership with Via Heart Project.

An estimated 1 in 500 school-age children suffer from undiagnosed heart defects, which can lead to sudden cardiac arrest and sometimes death, according to the organization.

The 60- to 90-minute screenings, which are noninvasive and do not include needles or X-rays, include: taking vital signs, a 12-lead EKG, a cardiologist consultation, CPR/AED training and a health history review.

To sign up, parents of children under 18 can go to www.viaheartproject.org/screenings. Space is limited to 750 participants.

The event is sponsored by Stanford Valley Care, Heart of the Valley Pediatric Cardiology and Alameda County EMS in addition to volunteer cardiologists, sonographers and nurses. Livermore High School is located at 600 Maple St. in Livermore.
