Nursing home residents play life-size ‘Hungry Hungry Hippos’ game during coronavirus lockdown: Watch

Patriot-News - 3/25/2020

Nursing homes around the world have found it necessary to enforce lockdowns to protect the safety of their residents and staff during the coronavirus pandemic.

CNN reports that at Bryn Celyn Care Home in Wales, United Kingdom, residents have not be able to take visits from loved ones since March 12, when the home went on lockdown.

“Everyone in the home team and residents are worried about the virus,” Michelle Williams\u200b, general manager at Bryn Celyn Care, told CNN. “But we are staying positive and doing what we do every day, which is supporting our residents, and keeping it as normal as possible.”

Williams told CNN that residents are filling their day with activities such as cooking, quizzes, craft sessions and exercise classes.

Nursing home staff is making sure that “stringent infection control measures” are in place, Williams told CNN, and currently no coronavirus-related illnesses have infected any resident or staff.

In order to lift residents’ morale, Bryn Celyn Care Home staff created a life-size version of the kids’ board game, “Hungry Hungry Hippos.” The idea came about after getting inspiration from something they saw online, according to CNN. To play the actual game, participants try to catch as many marbles as possible with their hippo’s mouth.

On Thursday, using a pile of plastic playpen balls to represent marbles, and makeshift hippo mouths made from plastic baskets and broomstick handles, four staff members paired up with four residents to play the game, says CNN.

You can watch the video of the game provided by the home care staff below.

In addition to “Hungry Hungry Hippos,” CNN reports the staff is finding other creative ways to keep residents occupied. Although the normal hairdresser can’t enter the home due to the lockdown, a staff member from the home’s housekeeping team held a hairdressing day on Friday, in the home’s hair salon.
