More than 30 residents test positive for COVID-19 at Carlisle nursing home

Patriot-News - 11/13/2020

Thirty-two residents at the Cumberland Crossings nursing home in Carlisle are in quarantine after testing positive for COVID-19, officials said.

Nine of the facility’s staff members have also tested positive, according to data on the facility’s website.

No one from Cumberland Crossings has died from the virus. The majority of residents who tested positive are asymptomatic, according to Bill Swanger, senior vice president of communications for Diakon, the company that owns Cumberland Crossings and a number of other senior living facilities in Pennsylvania and Maryland.

“We were very fortunate for a long time and have very few if any cases this summer. Unfortunately, we’ve had a few instances like this where it spreads quickly," Swanger said.

Cumberland Crossings officials conduct weekly coronavirus tests among the residents and staff, Swanger said.

In-person visitation is suspended at least until the facility goes two consecutive weeks without anyone testing positive.

“We know it’s a significant impact on families and residents but that’s the only way to keep the cases down," Swanger said.

“We continue to focus on cohorting of residents and the use of negative-pressure air machines to help mitigate potential spread of the virus,” said Eric Kline, executive director of Cumberland Crossings. “Additional levels of personal protective equipment are on-site to make sure we have sufficient PPE over the next several weeks.”
