Housing help on the way to San Joaquin for people with disabilities

Record - 11/25/2020

STOCKTON – The Housing Authority County of San Joaquin just announced it has received enough federal funding to provide 75 Mainstream Voucher Program vouchers providing rental assistance for non-elderly people with disabilities who are transitioning out of institutional or other segregated settings and are homeless, at risk of becoming homeless, or at risk of institutionalization.

The county housing agency’s latest award, valued at $462,933, will become effective in January. It was authorized by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act and allocated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to provide additional vouchers to public housing agencies nationwide to help them prevent, prepare for and respond to COVID-19.

The authority previously received 44 Mainstream vouchers in August 2018, valued at $333,686. Last June, the authority was awarded an additional 14 vouchers, valued at $80,464. As of this month, there are 54 Mainstream vouchers in use in San Joaquin County.

The Mainstream Voucher program, according to the housing authority, encourages partnerships with health and human service agencies as well as community-based organizations with a demonstrated capacity to coordinate services and support that enable people with disabilities to live independently.

Currently, there are 68 applicants in the Mainstream voucher pool with priority to receive rental assistance. They were referred by the following agencies:

San Joaquin General Hospital. Community Medical Centers. San Joaquin County Behavioral Health Services. Disability Resource Agency for Independent Living, or DRAIL. Mary Magdalene Community Services. Stockton Shelter for the Homeless.
