Two Kings Casino develops Share Change program, donates to local organization

Nov. 18—The Catawba Two Kings Casino has become a hot spot in Kings Mountain that continues to produce lucky winners.

While the goal is to be an outlet for adults looking for a place to play the slots, the new gaming destination has started the Share Change program to donate to local charities.

The casino raised $10,000 for the Cleveland County Fund for Children and Adults with Disabilities. The fund, a service of the Junior Charity League of Shelby, provides financial aid for individuals living with a disability.

Jennifer Reynolds of the Junior Charity League of Shelby said it was a nice surprise as she was unaware of the donation up until it was presented.

"We didn't realize what was going on until we were handed the check," said Reynolds. "We were all shocked. The casino is starting to give out to charities. They chose us as their first charity to give to. We are very lucky. It was wonderful. We work in conjunction with the United Way to help disperse the funds."

The purpose of the fund is to secure basic needs and more for those living with a disability. Things such as eyeglasses, a special needs car seat and even tuition assistance for a special needs student have been accomplished through other charitable giving.

"Anything with someone that has a disability, we try to fulfill those needs at the time of the request," said Reynolds. "We work with the United Way. They get requests from Cleveland County from people that have disabilities. This is going to help so many people. Things are expensive. The fund can help pay for things insurance won't cover."

The Share Change Program will raise funds for various organizations to be issued on a quarterly basis. The program was developed two weeks after the casino opened earlier this year.

"It is unclaimed money that is left on the machines," said Catawba Assistant Chief Jason Harris. "Our gaming authority officials will let us know how much is left and then we choose the charity. That is our home, so we look to give back to the community in North Carolina and back home."

According to a press release issued by the casino, "Patrons donated the remaining change on slot vouchers, dropping them in wishing wells and large ticket barrels located on the casino floor."

Most people go to a casino hoping to hit the jackpot. Harris expressed his gratitude to those who had others in mind before or after they played the slots.

"The Catawba Nation and our Catawba Two Kings Casino are committed to making a positive change in our local communities, and the Share Change program is a way for us to begin fulfilling that commitment," said Harris. "We thank our casino patrons for their generosity and are thrilled to provide these funds to such a worthy cause."
