Nursing home workers plan to picket Wednesday

The Citizens' Voice - 5/3/2022

May 3—More than 2,000 nursing home workers at 35 locations across Pennsylvania plan an informational picket Wednesday to demand better staffing, job standards and accountability, SEIU Healthcare PA announced.

Informational pickets will be held 2 to 4 at six locations in Northeast Pennsylvania including The Gardens at Wyoming Valley, 50 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Wilkes-Barre and Riverside Rehab and Nursing Center, 500 Hospital St., Taylor.

SEIU said the COVID-19 pandemic along with "irresponsible nursing home ownership and decades of regulatory neglect have left our nursing home system in a catastrophic crisis — and it's seniors, residents and caregivers who are paying the price."

The union also cautioned that if the nursing home industry is not reformed, there will not be enough caregivers to take care of Pennsylvania's rapidly growing senior population.
